Radiographs

Radiographs, commonly known as dental X-rays, are one of the most useful tools we have for looking beyond what can be seen during a standard examination. At The Good Dentist, Newcastle, we use modern digital imaging to help diagnose, plan and monitor a wide range of dental concerns. From spotting early decay to planning more complex treatment, radiographs give your dentist a clearer picture of what is happening beneath the surface, so your care can be based on a thorough understanding of your individual needs.

Why Radiographs Matter

Many dental issues develop in places that are difficult or impossible to see with the naked eye, such as between teeth, below the gum line or within the bone. Radiographs allow us to detect these concerns earlier, which often means simpler and more timely care. We use radiographs to assist with the diagnosis of decay, infection and bone loss, as well as the assessment of wisdom teeth. Used alongside regular check-ups, they form an important part of preventative dental care.

Our Imaging Services

We offer a range of digital imaging options tailored to what each situation calls for:

  • Digital intraoral X-rays with reduced radiation exposure compared with older film-based methods
  • OPG (orthopantomogram or panoramic) imaging, which captures a broad view of the teeth, jaws and surrounding structures in a single image for comprehensive assessment
  • CBCT (3D imaging) for implant planning and surgical assessment, giving a detailed three-dimensional view where required
  • CBCT technology to assist with root canal treatment planning and execution
  • Fast digital imaging with chairside review, so your dentist can show and explain the results with you during your appointment

The Benefits of Digital Imaging in Dentistry

Digital imaging in dentistry has changed the way modern practices work. Digital intraoral X-rays involve reduced radiation exposure when compared with traditional film, and images are available almost immediately rather than needing to be developed. This means less waiting and a smoother appointment for you.

An OPG, or panoramic radiograph, is particularly helpful when a wider view is needed, for example when assessing wisdom teeth or reviewing the overall condition of the jaw. For more detailed situations, CBCT provides three-dimensional imaging that supports careful planning for procedures such as dental implants and root canal treatment. Having this level of detail helps your dentist assess each case and discuss the options that may be suitable for you.

A Clear and Considered Approach

We understand that some patients feel unsure about dental X-rays, and we are always happy to talk through why an image has been recommended and what it involves. Radiographs are only taken when there is a clear clinical reason to do so, and we follow appropriate protocols to keep radiation exposure as low as reasonably practicable.

Because we use fast digital imaging with chairside review, your dentist can look at your radiographs with you and explain what they show, helping you feel informed and involved in decisions about your care.
